Sometimes, a song can be uplifting and carry someone from deep despair and regret to hope and empowerment. This month's DVITA choice is "The Reckoning" by Halestorm. It's not a new song from them, but it's one of the best.
From "megbby1"- "As someone who survived an abusive relationship, this song has so much meaning for me. Love it so much it gives me goosebumps. Thanks, Halestorm for giving a voice to everything I've felt but couldn't really say." Then there's this from "jerriwilson 5247"- "Played this song after court when my ex went to prison for almost killing me. For every wrong you did to me I am the reckoning!!!!!
"I gave you more than my heart could hope for, You misused it, Scraped up every piece that fell to the floor, When you tore through it, Laying me to ruin, You knew what you were doing, Leaving me to skin and bone"- that describes the devastation we feel when we're abused and betrayed. Then, the line "Like a reckoning, You never saw it coming, I'm the reaper outside your door."
Those words aren't about revenge- it's about vengeance- the taking back that part of yourself that someone steals from you when they mistreat and gaslight you and blame you for their shortcomings. It's emotional, dark, and uplifting- without a doubt one of my favorite Halestorm songs. You can feel her justified anger in every breath. Turn it up.
