DV in the Arts, part 5

This month's entry into our series is from Eminem and the song is called "Love the way you lie" and features Rihanna. This hip-hop song explores the confusing way patterns of abuse and make-up affect people who have attraction for each other, while at the same time, take their emotions out on each other.

The song itself is a contradiction- Rihanna's melodic voice expresses melancholy "you just watch me burn but that's alright 'cuz I like the way it hurts" as Eminem angrily raps "High off her love, drunk from her hate, It's like I'm huffing paint and I love her the more I suffer, I suffocate And right before I'm about to drown, she resuscitates me She f##king hates me and I love it."

The cycle of violence between two people can be violent and vicious. It's important to understand what a relationship should be- supportive and nurturing- and seek help when it isn't.
