This is the first in a series of articles on information and strategies that you'll need to know in your quest for freedom from an abusive partner.
If you’re in a relationship that feels unsafe, you may not be ready—or able—to leave right now. That’s more common than people think. A safety plan isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about taking small, thoughtful steps to help protect yourself in ways that feel possible for you.

What Is a Safety Plan?
A safety plan is a simple, personalized plan that helps you think ahead about your safety.
It can include:
What to do during an argument
Who you can reach out to
How to leave quickly if needed
You can create a safety plan whether you stay, leave, or are still unsure. Here's a form to download.
A Few Small Steps You Can Take
You don’t have to do everything at once. Even one step can make a difference.
Keep your phone charged and nearby
Identify a safer area in your home (away from kitchens or bathrooms)
Share a code word with someone you trust
Copy and set aside important documents if you can
Trust your instincts—if something feels like it’s escalating, it probably is
If You’re Thinking About Leaving
Leaving can be a dangerous time, so planning ahead can help.
Consider:
Packing a small bag and keeping it somewhere safe
Thinking through where you could go
Identifying transportation options
Reaching out to a Sojourn advocate to talk through your plan
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Safety planning can feel overwhelming—but you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
Talking to someone who understands can help you think through your options and create a plan that fits your situation.
