The Future You, part 4: Court Advocates

This is the fourth in a series of articles on information and strategies that you'll need to know in your quest for freedom from an abusive partner.

The take-away to this article is that you don't have to face the legal system alone. I'm leading with that because our Court Advocates are here to help you understand your options, navigate the court process, and provide support every step of the way. You don't have to know exactly what you need before you call. A court advocate's role is to explain options, answer questions, and walk alongside you- not pressure you into taking legal action.

What to Expect When You Contact a Sojourn Court Advocate

• A safe, confidential conversation. You'll have the opportunity to share as much or as little about your situation as you're comfortable discussing.

• Someone who listens without judgment. Our advocates understand that every survivor's situation is different. They'll listen, believe you, and respect your decisions.

• Information about your legal options. You'll receive clear explanations about Orders of Protection, court hearings, criminal cases, custody concerns, and other legal processes so you can make informed choices.

• Help completing court paperwork. If you decide to pursue legal action, your advocate can assist with forms and explain what information is needed.

• Support during court proceedings. A court advocate may accompany you to hearings, explain what is happening, and provide emotional support throughout the process.

• Connections to additional services. If you need emergency shelter, safety planning, counseling, children's services, support groups, housing resources, or other assistance, your advocate can connect you with those services.

• Respect for your choices. Whether you're ready to seek an Order of Protection, have questions about court, or simply want information, the decision is always yours. Your advocate is there to support- not pressure- you.

• Continued support. Court cases often involve multiple hearings and changing circumstances. Your advocate can continue working with you throughout the process.
